Overview
Edeva AB is a Swedish company specialising in traffic management systems. Its sensors and speed-reduction measures are deployed at sensitive locations such as school zones, accident-prone pedestrian crossings and busy city intersections. Its core technology measures traffic volumes, vehicle speeds and vehicle classifications, giving urban planners and traffic authorities the evidence they need to enforce rules, including environmental ones.
Edeva first worked with RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden) as a data provider. RISE is a partner in CitCom.ai, the EU-funded Testing and Experimentation Facility for AI in smart cities and communities. RISE used Edeva’s data to build a traffic prediction model. As the work progressed, Edeva saw what its own data could support and became a client. It turned to RISE and CitCom.ai for help refining AI models and understanding the regulatory obligations attached to them. The City of Stockholm also took part in the collaboration.
Impact
Edeva now has a basis for developing AI-powered services that are technically sound and legally defensible. The company has validated models, tested them against synthetic scenarios, and understands how its systems reach their outputs. It also has a working knowledge of the regulatory obligations that will apply to future products. For a startup, that reduces the risk of building services that later need costly rework to meet compliance requirements. For cities such as Stockholm, it points towards more capable tools for monitoring traffic and enforcing environmental zones.
The Challenge
Edeva had no AI in its commercial offering, although the format and volume of the data it collects are well suited to training reliable models. The value of that data shows in a case study from the project. In the City of Stockholm, Edeva recorded a daily average of more than 800 older, non-compliant vehicles driving through a zone restricted to cars and lorries meeting the Euro 6 emission standard. Insights of this kind matter to cities trying to enforce low-emission policies. Turning them into AI-driven services, however, raised two questions for a company of Edeva’s size. The first was technical: how to build models that are accurate and robust, particularly where real-world data is scarce. The second was regulatory: how to do so in a way that meets the requirements of the EU’s Artificial Intelligence Act and related digital legislation, at a time when standards and certification schemes are still taking shape.
The Solution
RISE and CitCom.ai gave Edeva a combination of technical testing and regulatory guidance through a series of tailored workshops. On the technical side, the partners worked with Edeva and the City of Stockholm to generate synthetic data. This is artificially created data that mimics real-world traffic conditions, and it allows models to be tested and refined where additional data is needed for validation. The models were then assessed for performance, robustness, ethics and diversity, and for explainability. That meant Edeva could check that its models worked and also understand how they reach their decisions.
On the regulatory side, RISE’s policy services helped Edeva interpret the AI Act and related frameworks, including data interoperability under the Interoperable Europe initiative. These services turned a large and complex body of legislation into practical guidance the company could act on. The workshops also covered different approaches to data collection and to the use of AI for traffic prediction, which helped Edeva plan for a regulatory landscape that will continue to change as new certifications and standards emerge.
