Overview

Modern agriculture is facing a turning point. Rising environmental demands, labour shortages, and the need for efficiency are pushing farmers to rethink how things are done. In Austria, tech company Farm-ING is answering that call—not with guesswork, but with precision.

Their mission? Use AI and robotics to make farming more sustainable and less dependent on chemicals. But bold ideas need real-world proof. That’s where the EU-funded agrifoodTEF project came in. Teaming up with the Austrian node,Josephinum Research, Farm-ING was able to put its Spot Sprayer technology to the test—literally—in live field conditions.

Impact

The trials delivered more than promising numbers—they showed what the future of farming could look like:

  • Up to 90% reduction in pesticide use, thanks to ultra-precise targeting
  • Spot application areas as small as 35 mm, keeping treatment focused and effective
  • No residue left on crops, supporting both food safety and sustainability goals
  • Designed with simplicity in mind, the system is accessible to farms as small as 10 hectares
  • After success in Austria, Farm-ING is expanding into Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium
  • An expected 80% export share reflects strong European interest and market readiness

These outcomes didn’t just validate a product—they confirmed that AI-powered tools can help shift agriculture toward smarter, greener practices

With field testing complete and expansion underway, Farm-ING is focused on scaling its solution to reach more farmers—both organic and conventional. By using artificial intelligence to reduce waste, streamline operations, and support sustainable goals, the company is carving out a new path for precision agriculture.

For Farm-ING, the agrifoodTEF experience provided more than a test—it offered a launchpad, built on real data, trusted partnerships, and expert support.

The Challenge

Across Europe, farmers are juggling multiple pressures:

  •  A shrinking labour force
  • Increased expectations for organic, eco-friendly production
  • A heavy reliance on time-consuming manual work—especially in organic farming

Farm-ING had developed a smart spraying system that could detect and target only the weeds in a crop field. The goal? Cut down chemical use, protect crops, and do it all automatically. But turning that vision into a field-ready product required one critical step: validation under real, practical conditions.

How do you prove your solution works, without building an entire test site from scratch? That was the hurdle.

The Solution

Through agrifoodTEF, Farm-ING found the right environment to trial their innovation. With support from Josephinum Research, they accessed professional testing facilities that mirrored on-the-ground agricultural conditions—offering everything needed to test, measure, and refine their Spot Sprayer.

The testing setup captured actual spray distribution in the field, allowing the team to assess exactly how accurately and efficiently the system delivered treatment. Importantly, this was done without changing the spraying method—offering a realistic picture of how the technology would perform in everyday farming.

The collaboration also gave Farm-ING access to expert insight, field data, and a feedback loop to improve performance while ensuring the system aligned with environmental and regulatory standards.
