Overview

Across Europe, public buildings such as schools, hospitals and care homes must comply with strict water hygiene regulations to reduce the risk of Legionella. Yet monitoring water temperature often relies on manual inspections, periodic spot checks and time-consuming documentation, making it difficult to identify risks as they emerge.
Within CitCom.ai, Swedish startup Tempivo AI is demonstrating how AI and connected sensors can transform this process. By combining continuous temperature monitoring with real-time analytics, the solution enables building managers to detect potential risks earlier, automate regulatory documentation and gain a clearer understanding of how water systems behave under everyday operating conditions.

Impact

Through testing in a real public building environment at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, Tempivo AI has been able to validate its solution under realistic operating conditions while generating practical insights for municipalities and public property managers.
Rather than relying on isolated measurements, continuous monitoring allows operators to observe how temperature fluctuates across the entire water system, making potential Legionella risks more visible before they become critical.
The project also demonstrates how AI can reduce administrative burden by automating compliance reporting, while providing municipalities with more reliable evidence to support maintenance decisions and regulatory inspections.
Beyond the individual pilot, the collaboration illustrates how CitCom.ai helps innovative SMEs validate smart city solutions in real environments, accelerating their pathway from prototype to wider public-sector adoption.

The Challenge

Maintaining safe water systems across large public building portfolios is both technically and operationally demanding.
Traditional monitoring methods provide only snapshots of system performance, leaving long periods during which temperature variations and potential bacterial growth may go unnoticed. At the same time, property managers must ensure compliance with strict regulatory requirements while minimising operational disruption.
For emerging technology providers such as Tempivo AI, demonstrating that new monitoring solutions can operate reliably in real public infrastructure is essential for building trust and supporting future market adoption.

The Solution

Within the CitCom.ai Testing and Experimentation Facility, Tempivo AI deployed its wireless sensor system in the canteen facilities of RISE in Kista, creating a real-world demonstration environment representative of everyday public building operations.
The sensors are installed externally on water pipes without requiring invasive installation or service interruption. Using NB-IoT connectivity, continuous temperature data is transmitted to an AI-powered platform capable of identifying water usage patterns, detecting deviations from regulatory thresholds and automatically generating compliance documentation.
As the pilot progressed, researchers gained new insights into the dynamic behaviour of water systems that would not have been visible through conventional spot measurements. At the same time, the testing environment provided Tempivo AI with valuable evidence to further refine its solution while demonstrating its practical value for municipalities responsible for managing complex public infrastructure.
